Out with the old, and keep it that way!
Have you found yourself watching one of those television shows where people have a hard time letting go of their stuff? Do you watch them and think, “I’m not that bad”? Clutter has a way of creeping up when we least expect it and before we realize it, our house is covered in piles and piles of stuff. It’s normal to fall behind and let the clutter in, but if you’ve found yourself wanting to purge, here are a few ideas to get started.
First things first, don’t try to tackle too much at once. It’s best to start one room at a time so you don’t get overwhelmed. Here, we’ve noted some tips on the four main rooms that suffer from clutter.
Kitchen
- Your kitchen is a food preparation area, not a storage space. Donate appliances you no longer use.
- Go through your plastic storage containers and toss any mismatched items.
- Short on space? Try a pot rack or a knife block to help free up counter and cabinet space.
- Organize the refrigerator shelf by shelf, tossing expired food and by grouping similar items together.
Master Bedroom
- Make the bed. A well-made bed encourages order and inspires calm.
- Keep dirty laundry in a laundry sorter in the closet or the laundry room to keep clothes off the floor.
- If you have children, make a rule that absolutely no toys are allowed in the master bedroom. Keep in mind, this is your space.
Living Room
- Stack and store magazines or books in a basket. Recycle old issues bimonthly.
- Gather and label various remotes – DVR, DVD, Stereo, Television, etc.
- Grab a label maker and label the cables behind your entertainment console.
- Assign each child a basket or plastic tote and have them put their toys away before bedtime.
Garage
- Group similar items together so you can tackle groups of items instead of one at a time.
- Once everything has been sorted, go through and decide what items you can get rid of.
- Invest in a few see-through plastic bins so you can keep your stuff dry while also knowing what’s in there.
