Spring is officially here, and pollen and dust mites have gotten into the air and unfortunately into the home. Microscopic mites, in particular, love lounging in your bed, pillows, and comforter. Here are a few of our best tricks for keeping your bedroom allergy-proof:

  • Each week, wash all the linens in hot water. Blankets and mattress pad also need to be washed about every 2 weeks as well.
  • If you have synthetic pillows, wash them monthly in hot water. Toss out any pillows with obvious signs of aging.
  • Avoid wool blankets, and anything rubber such as cushions, pillows, and mattresses.
  • Avoid cushioned headboards, canopies, ruffles, and flowing bed skirts (unless washed regularly with the linen).
  • Keep bookcases away from the bed where dust mites tend to gather.
  • Remove any candles from the bedroom, especially scented. These can attract bugs.
  • Avoid placing your bed under or near an air vent. Dust mites love to hide here and can cause spreading when the air or heat comes on.
  • Don’t eat in bed. Cockroaches love to gather where food is.
  • We know they are cute and lovable, but try and keep pets out of the bedroom, or at least off of the bed. Dander and dust will make its’ way into your bed if your pets do.
  • Remove all junk under the bed. Piles of stuff collect dust mites easily and  will have you suffering all night long.

Hopefully these tips will help you control the allergy situation in your home in no time. It is always a good idea to schedule a regular cleaning service to go through and give your home and thorough cleaning.
